Ever find yourself skipping the gym because you just can’t seem to find the motivation?
Let’s talk about how to stop relying on external reasons and start taking control of your progress.
I remember when I was a Master Trainer at 24 Hour Fitness. I had the opportunity to work with an executive at Amazon named Nick. He was a former athlete, specifically a baseball player. Over time, Nick lost his motivation to exercise. He traded physical growth for business growth. When he came to me, my job was to reignite that motivation.
We started training twice a week. I gave him a four-day training plan: two sessions with me, and two on his own.
After a while, I noticed his progress was slower than expected. So, I asked him, “Hey, are you sticking to the plan and showing up for your other workouts?”
He admitted that he wasn’t. “I just can’t motivate myself to go to the gym,” he said. “You’re the one who motivates me to show up.”
That’s when I told him something important.
“If there’s one thing to take away from our sessions, it’s this: take the energy and guidance I give you and learn how to recreate that for yourself. Remind yourself of how you feel during our sessions, how I encourage and guide you, and channel that energy on the days we don’t train together. Because at the end of the day, I won’t be here forever. If you don’t learn how to motivate yourself outside of our sessions, how do you expect to grow?”
This was a big realization for him. He thought hiring a trainer was just about those 50-minute sessions. But the real growth happens in the 23 hours outside of them.
Sure, it’s great to rely on a trainer to push you beyond your limits, diagnose problems, and quickly implement new ideas. You also build a personal connection. But you have to gain the skills to access your own inner power. That’s where true progress is made. When you can push yourself beyond the gym and beyond our time together.
True motivation comes from within.
External factors like a trainer can inspire us, but real, lasting change happens when you dig deep and find your internal drive. It’s about recommitting to your choice every single day. Remembering not just the choice itself, but why you made it.
Each day brings new challenges that test your commitment. The key is to draw from your inner power. That’s your most reliable and strongest source. Once you build the habit of accessing that inner strength, everything external becomes a bonus rather than a necessity.
That’s why it’s important to find ways to stay motivated beyond the gym. It could be a mentor, an online community, or even a game-like approach that keeps you engaged and growing.
